MASH UPS
I love to make arrangements that combine different songs, different composers and styles, and result in a new song that sheds new light on the originals. A few of my favorites below:
Created for Christi Crowley and Grayson Hart, this mashup combines three of their favorite songs, guest-starring Jasmine Cephas-Jones and Anthony Ramos. Filmed by Cherie B. Tay.
This musical-theater arrangement was commissioned by Jeremy Jordan and his music director Ben Rauhala to combine "Ten Minutes Ago" from Cinderella and "The Next Ten Minutes" from The Last 5 Years.
This was a very fun arrangement honoring two 'diva' songs: "Poor Unfortunate Souls" from The Little Mermaid and "Ladies who Lunch" from Sondheim's Company.
Working with my friend Michael Lowney, a fabulous performer and fellow Montanan, we came up with this medley/mashup of musical theater 'Love' songs. The idea was to start with a simple statement of "I have a love" from West Side Story, and then use a lot of different songs to show have tracking that love through a relationship is complicated, but ultimately worth it.
Another mashup created for my sister, Christi. This combines some of her favorite songs that we always listened to together, the Cure's "Just like Heaven", Taylor Swift's "Just like Trouble", and a little of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody".
This mashup was created for Broadway Cares' annual "Gypsy of the Year" in 2016. Done shortly after the 2016 election, I looked to Langston Hughes for words that would express the disappointment and hope of America, and mixed it with music from HAMILTON and "America the Beautiful" to indicate the gravity of America's promise. However, we also ended with "One Love", because there was so much raw emotion that called for soothing and uplifting.
Made at the request of Lin-Manuel Miranda, this short mashup of "Stars" from Les Miserables and "Wait for It" from Hamilton was released as a digital #Ham4Ham.
I loved creating this arrangement for the talented Ariana DeBose and her cabaret "Typed Out." This is the song "Manhattan" by Sara Bareilles and "Move On" from Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George.
I made this arrangement for my love, Carlos Gonzalez, just to surprise him. At the time, he had just finished a run in the Off-Bway show Fuerza Bruta, and a production of West Side Story. So wove together some of those two scores, with a couple other additions, and footage of vacations we had taken that year.
My parents were married in 1977, so on the occasion of their 40th Anniversary I created this mashup using all the songs that were at their wedding, from Jacques Brel's "If we only have love" to Judy Collins' "Since you've asked".
